Many parents are considering some form of alternative education — including homeschooling – instead of returning children to classrooms during/after the pandemic.

A recent U.S. Department of Education study gives a new glimpse into the reasons why families choose homeschooling over other forms of education for their children. The reasons are not at all surprising, and appear to emphasize the growing concern over the public school environment plus a general dissatisfaction with the academic instruction found at these schools.
In the study, parents were asked to choose the important, and most important reasons for homeschooling their children.
The answers shown below, ranked in order of the percentage of responses*.
The MOST IMPORTANT reasons parents gave for homeschooling their children:
- A concern about the environment of other schools (25%)
- Other reasons (family time, finances, travel and distance) (21%)
- A dissatisfaction with the academic instruction at schools (19%)
- A desire to provide religious instruction (16%)
- A desire to provide moral instruction (5%)
- A desire to provide a non-traditional approach to the child’s education (5%)
- Child has a physical or mental health problem (5%)
The IMPORTANT reasons parents gave for homeschooling their children:
- A concern about the environment of other schools (91%)
- A desire to provide moral instruction (77%)
- A dissatisfaction with the academic instruction at schools (74%)
- A desire to provide religious instruction (64%)
- A desire to provide a non-traditional approach to the child’s education (44%)
- Other reasons (family time, finances, travel and distance) (37%)
- Child has other special needs (17%)
- Child has a physical or mental health problem (15%)
