A common pattern among those who are very anxious or fearful is the limiting belief that those feelings have a useful purpose. Remembering that people only do things that serve them on some level, it’s easy to understand how beliefs – whether conscious or subconscious – will always stick around as long as they’re helpful in some way.
When looking at fear, the belief usually goes something like this, “If I don’t obsess over this thing forever, something terrible might happen to me”. Or, “I need to think about this thing all the time, or else something will go wrong.”
Generally speaking, fear beliefs stick around as long as the person believes that fear is somehow keeping them safe.
When tapping on fears (essentially beliefs, thoughts and emotions) we calm the body’s response to thinking about those things. We can also usually find where the beliefs are locked and disrupt then calm them in a way that they don’t affect us any more.
This begs the question of whether our newer, calmer selves will now become careless, recklessly moving about through life and putting ourselves in greater danger. (There’s a paradox there, too, if you think about it. The mind is fascinating, isn’t it?)
In the video, below, I address in detail the issue of fears versus recklessness. Feel free to comment if this has affected you personally and how you’ve been able to address it (if you have). And, as always, let me know if I can help.
