Block Scheduling Tutorial: Part 1 (4:13)

Some families are more scheduled than others, ranging from very rigid to hardly scheduled at all.  In this informal video, I talk about why I think scheduling is important for all homeschoolers. I also share a simple way to begin block scheduling using a white-board and stickies (see if you can count the number of times I say the word “future”). This video is Part 1 of 2.  Watch for the next half coming soon…

I do agree with you video. I have a schedule for the girls which helps keep me from straying too far out into left field. The girls use it too. We have a loose schedule for meal ideas as well. This helps us to get out of the rut of repeat recipes for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

With our daily activity’s and our extra curricular schedule, these tools helps us keep some order to our lives. I like to feel a sense of accomplishment at the end of each day.

We have a similar board as yours, and the girls have one with their chores listed on it which they self monitor for their allowances.

We to use a schedule for both school and daily chores! I have a paper wall chart that we use little pieces of paper with wall putty, each child has a column and our day is actually scheduled from 7am-9pm. We are flexible but at least if it’s there we have the guide. We usually try to stick with the schedule for school to ensure we get what we need to done each day! We too would have absolute chaos if we didn’t have a schedule to go by! We actually even schedule playtime and free time for our toddler! She has computer time, project time, tv time and of course free time etc.

Thanks for sharing the videos Marie-Claire, I’ve enjoyed them.

That’s a neat way to schedule. I like that. We have a white board that hangs near the kitchen we use for work schedules and extra activities. When the kids get their schedules from their jobs then they place the info on this for me. It’s also a place for notes to each other. Then I keep a school schedule on yahoo calendar that I work on usually Sunday afternoon. It’s real easy to go in and change the times similar to what you did. I have to plan out time down to every 15 min. though to utilize all time available once we add in all my drive time. We even have to school in the car at times. Neat website you got going here Marie-Claire, and it was good to see you in that way!

I like this idea! We’ve not used a written down schedule in the past, but it will be on my to do list today! One of my children can take up to 2 hours or more to get a lesson completed, and by that time I am beyond stressed and the rest of my day is off schedule, house hold chores behind as well as dinner, not to mention we are off to sports by 3:30 and not home until 7:30 Monday-Thursday.
By making a written schedule part of my daily routine, is sure to smooth out my school days.
    Thanks for the encouragement!
